Looking Back In the July 1998 Pacific Coast Journal

The cover featured four cute foals from the A Lazy L Ranch in Galt. The A Lazy L Ranch bred registered Quarter Horses and Paints.

In her president’s message, Lori Pabst congratulated those that made the PCQHYA Youth World Team and wished them luck at the upcoming AQHYA World Show scheduled in August. The 1998 Youth Team consisted of almost 90 members! Lori also reported on two successful clinics that PCQHA had sponsored in June. One was a Horsemanship Clinic put on by Cathy Hanson and her father Don Blazer. The other was a Reining/Cowhorse Clinic with Ron Emmons. Lori also encouraged everyone to attend the upcoming PCQHA Annual Fair Show at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

In her AQHA Director’s Update, Sandy Arledge reported that AQHA would be awarding a bronze trophy to those individuals who have bred registered American Quarter Horses for a cumulative total of over 50 years.

An obituary for Charles and Geri Morgan’s great stallion, Quincy Feature, ran in the July issue. Quincy Feature lived from 1977 to 1998 and was the sire of multiple AQHA, APHA, ApHC, and PHBA World Champions as well as outstanding broodmares.

An article recapping the annual AQHA Convention listed some of the Californian’s who had been honored at the Awards Banquet. Some of the honorees included Gary Wanzek (Champion Amateur Halter Stallion – Proof Of Tardee), Bill and Shirley Saxton (Champion Halter Mare – Misters Fancy Sugar), John Ducato (Champion Halter Gelding – An Obvious Color), and Nancy Alto (Amateur Supreme Champion – Conclusives Bar Cody). Inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame was the very successful California jockey Bobby Adair. The AQHA Legacy Award was presented to The Vessels Stallion Farm of Bonsall.

PCQHA points were listed through May 31 and some of the Open leaders at that time were Bruce N Doc (Doug Brown) – Pole Bending; Look Whos Larkin (Larry Bryson) – Heeling; Say Hes Classic (Jill Newcomb) – Junior Hunter Under Saddle; Zippin Principle (Hillary Armstrong) – Junior Western Riding; and JP Cut To Order (Laura Attig) – Senior Reining

There was show held every weekend in July 1998: first weekend was the VQHA Firecracker Circuit in Costa Mesa, followed by the PCQHA Fair Show in Costa Mesa. Next up was the VQHA Summer Circuit in Pomona and then AQHB of SCV Summer Circuit in Watsonville.

The back cover of the issue featured Beck Farms’ stallion, Zippin Bonanza Flash, and one of his offspring, Bos Gone Platinum. Zippin Bonanza Flash stood at Beck Farms in Lodi and his stud fee in 1998 was $1,000.
